New vote piles pressure on Musharraf to quit

Post by Pr10r_23 »

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (CNN) -- The third of Pakistan's four provincial assemblies passed a resolution Wednesday calling for Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf to step down or face impeachment.

Wednesday's action by the provincial assembly in Sindh leaves just Balochistan lawmakers to vote on a similar resolution. They have indicated that they will do so before the week's end.

The vote in the Sindh assembly did not garner the overwhelming numbers as those in the Punjab and North West Frontier Province assemblies earlier in the week.

Of 166 lawmakers, 94 voted for the resolution. Seventy two assembly members did not take part. Some were out of town, while others boycotted because they are members of Musharraf's Pakistan Muslim League-Q party or its ally, the Muttahida Quami Movement.

The resolutions are non-binding, but they indicate growing pressure from Pakistani lawmakers push the politically embattled president from office.

Musharraf has shown no inclination to step down.

He seized power in a bloodless coup nearly nine years ago and ruled Pakistan until his foes swept to victory in parliamentary elections in February. He has seen his power erode significantly since then.

Still, any parliamentary process to unseat him would be arduous.

The ruling coalition would have to compile a list of charges against Musharraf to impeach him. Once lawmakers submit charges, the National Assembly -- the lower house of Parliament -- would vote on whether to move forward with impeachment. A majority vote would be required for the charges to be considered. Next would come an actual vote on impeaching Musharraf.
