Northern Ireland police colluded to murder: report
Last Update: Monday, January 22, 2007. 10:21pm (AEDT)
A report to be published later today by Northern Ireland's police ombudsman is expected to confirm claims of extensive collusion between officers and pro-British or loyalist paramilitary killers in North Belfast.
It will disclose that members of the loyalist Ulster Volunteer Force worked as police informers and their contacts in the police intervened in murder investigations to ensure they were not charged.
The Northern Ireland Secretary, Peter Hain, says the report exposes grave abuses of power.
"It does make it extremely uncomfortable reading," he said.
"There were some extremely serious failures of duty and I do say that it relates to the past and these things, murder collusion, cover up, obstruction of investigations could not happen today.
"Not least because of accountability mechanisms that have been put in place."
