NEW YORK - Several dozen people were arrested in midtown Manhattan early Monday after a night of mayhem that included three shootings.
The crimes occurred around a mile-long stretch of midtown, from Herald Square to Times Square to near Rockefeller Center, police said. The charges included disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and weapon possession.
Large groups of youths ran amok, witnesses said. Fights reportedly broke out and witnesses described hearing shots, local media reported.
A man was shot in the ankle around midnight near Seventh Avenue and 41st Street.
A woman was shot with a BB gun near Seventh Avenue and 51st Street.
About two hours later, two women were hit — one in the elbow and another in the thigh — near Seventh Avenue and 34th Street.
The New York Times reported that police officers closed 41st Street between Seventh and Eighth Avenues, as well as other streets in the area, to encourage the crowds to disperse and go home.
Officers also searched trash cans and stopped pedestrians to search their bags, the newspaper reported.
